September 2007
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often five or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in September should they be?

For the weekend of September 7th, it is “3:10 to Yuma” starring Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, and Gretchen Mol (The Notorious Bettie Page). A western / drama, rated R.
The plot: In Arizona in the late 1800's, infamous outlaw Wade (Crowe) and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran Evans (Bale), struggling to survive on his drought-plagued ranch, volunteers to deliver him alive to the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the killer to trial. On the trail, Evans and Wade, each from very different worlds, begin to earn each other's respect. But with Wade's outfit on their trail - and dangers at every turn - the mission soon becomes a violent, impossible journey toward each man's destiny.

There are six other new releases this weekend: The Brothers Solomon, The Bubble, Feel The Noise, Hatchet, I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With, and Shoot ‘Em Up.

For the weekend of September 14th, it is “The Brave One” starring Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard (Pride), Naveen Andrews (Lost), and Mary Steenburgen (Joan of Arcadia). A suspense / drama, rated R.
The plot: New York radio host Erica Bain (Foster) has a life that she loves and a fiancé she adores. All of it is taken from her when a brutal attack leaves Erica badly wounded and her fiancé dead. Unable to move past the tragedy, Erica begins prowling the city streets at night to track down the men she holds responsible. Her dark pursuit of justice catches the public's attention, and the city is riveted by her anonymous exploits. But with the NYPD desperate to find the culprit and a dogged police detective (Howard) hot on her trail, she must decide whether her quest for revenge is truly the right path, or if she is becoming the very thing she is trying to stop.

There are eleven other new releases this weekend: Across the Universe, December Boys, Dragon Wars, Eastern Promises, Fierce People, The Hunting Party, In the Valley of Elah, Ira and Abby, Mr. Woodcock, Silk, and Moving McAllister.

For the weekend of September 21st, it is “Good Luck Chuck” starring Dane Cook and Jessica Alba. A comedy / romance, rated R.
The plot: A handsome but self-involved dentist (Cook) discovers that every woman he goes out with, meets her soul mate immediately after dating him, keeping him free to continue playing the field. This has made him wildly popular with single women. But the blessing turns into a curse when he meets his true love (Alba), and he must find a way to stop her from falling for another guy.

There are five other new releases this weekend: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Into the Wild, The Jane Austin Book Club, Resident Evil: Extinction, and Sydney White.

For the weekend of September 28th, it is “The Kingdom” starring Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper (Breach), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), and Jeremy Piven (Smokin’ Aces). An action / suspense / drama, rated R.
The plot: After a deadly terrorist attack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia takes the lives of many innocent American civilians, the FBI decides to take action by sending a team to capture those responsible. Hot shot Special Agent Fluery (Foxx) gets the task of a lifetime when he is picked to lead the elite group into conflict. With three top agents (Garner, Bateman, Cooper) at his side, he’s confident that they will be able to infiltrate and bring down the terrorist cell within a week’s time. Once there, however, the group finds themselves crippled by the disorienting culture, the scorching heat, and the dirty, labyrinthine politics. It isn’t long before the foursome begins to doubt the reliability of their supposed informants and allies, which eventually leads them to question their own abilities. With local law enforcement more of a hindrance than help, Fluery finds unexpected aid from a sympathetic Saudi police captain. Soon, the FBI unit picks up the track, leading them to the inevitable showdown with the opposing force.

There are six other new releases this weekend: The Darjeeling Limited, Feast of Love, The Game Plan, Lust / Caution, Postal, and Run Fat Boy Run.

If you miss any of these in the first few weeks of release at the big multiplexes in the Airpark area including Harkins, AMC or United Artists / Regal, you might catch some of them at Farrelli’s Cinema Supper Club where you can have a full dinner or cocktails, and Thursdays are Classic Movie night. Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
