August 2009
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in August should they be?

For the weekend of August 7, it is “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, starring Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Arnold Vosloo, directed by Stephen Sommers. Genre: action / adventure, sci-fi thriller, not yet rated. Plot: a European-based elite military unit known as Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity (G.I.J.O.E.), a hi-tech, international force of special operatives takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Cold Souls, Julie & Julia and Shorts.

For the weekend of August 14, it is “District 9”, starring Sharlto Copley, David James, directed by Neill Blomkamp. Genre: sci-fi, rated R. Plot: an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth unexpectedly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.

The other eight movies opening this weekend are: Bandslam, The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard, It Might Get Loud, Paper Heart, A Perfect Getaway, Ponyo, Spread, and The Time Traveler’s Wife.

For the weekend of August 21, it is “Inglorious Basterds”, starring Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, and Melanie Laurent, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Genre: WW II drama, not yet rated. Plot: in German-occupied France, Shosanna Dreyfus (Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hands of a Nazi Colonel. She narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of brutal retribution against the Nazis. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent (Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.

The other movie opening this weekend is Post Grad.

For the weekend of August 28, it is “Taking Woodstock”, starring Demetri Martin, Eugene Levy, and Liev Schreiber, directed by Ang Lee. Genre: drama, musical comedy, rated R. Plot: based on the true story about Elliot Tiber (Martin), who while working at his parents motel in the Catskills of NY, inadvertently played a pivotal role in making the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the famed happening it became. Mr. Tiber found himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life, and American culture forever in the summer of 1969.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Halloween II and The Final Destination.

Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
