June 2009
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in June should they be?

For the weekend of June 5, it is “Land of the Lost”, starring Will Ferrell, Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down), Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), and Jorma Taccone (Saturday Night Live), directed by Brad Silberling (10 Items of Less). Genre: action / adventure, comedy, rated PG-13. The plot: a discredited scientist (Ferrell) has been sucked back through time via an invention. Way back. He has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world. Fortunately, pulled along with him are super smart research assistant (Friel) and a redneck survivalist (McBride). Chased by T-Rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles, they must rely on their only ally - a primate (Taccone) to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they’re heroes. Get stuck, and they'll be permanent refugees.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Away We Go, The Hangover, and My Life in Ruins.

For the weekend of June 12, it is “The Taking of Pelham 123”, starring Denzel Washington, John Travolta, John Turturro (You Don’t Mess with the Zohan), Luis Guzman (Nothing Like the Holidays), and James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), directed by Tony Scott (Deja Vu). Genre: crime drama / thriller, rated R. The plot: New York City subway dispatcher Garber (Washington) whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. Criminal mastermind Ryder (Travolta) is the leader of a highly armed gang, who threatens to execute the train's passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there's one riddle Garber can't solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Dead Snow, Imagine That, and Moon.

For the weekend of June 19, it is “Whatever Works”, starring Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler), Patricia Clarkson (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Michael McKean (For Your Consideration), and Ed Begley Jr., directed by Woody Allen. Genre: romantic comedy, rated PG-13. The plot: a highly eccentric character (David) runs into a young girl (Wood) from the South and soon after, her mother and soon after, her father. The three of them, along with the eccentric’s other crazy Greenwich Village friends, get into a series of highly improbable, far out, romantic entanglements.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Food, Inc., The Proposal, and Year One.

For the weekend of June 26, it is “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen”, starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, and Rainn Wilson (The Office), directed by Michael Bay (Transformers). Genre: action / adventure, science fiction, rated PG-13. The plot: Optimus Prime along with the rest of the good and evil Autobots return for the live action sequel to the 2007 blockbuster "Transformers".

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Cheri and My Sister’s Keeper.

Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
