June 2008
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often five or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which five (due to a tie) in June should they be?

For the weekend of June 6, it is “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan”, starring Adam Sandler, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), Rob Schneider, Shelley Berman (Boston Legal), and Mariah Carey, directed by Dennis Dugan (I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry). Genre: comedy, rated PG-13. The plot: An Israeli Mossad agent (Sandler) fakes his death so he can begin a new life as a hair stylist in New York City. Then things get a little more complicated.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Mongol and Kung Fu Panda.

For the weekend of June 13, it is a tie, first with “The Incredible Hulk”, starring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth (Funny Games), William Hurt, and Tim Blake Nelson (The Astronaut Farmer), directed by Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2). Genre: action / adventure, fantasy, science fiction, not yet rated. The plot: Dr. Bruce Banner continues to search the globe for the antidote that will prevent his angry giant green monster alter ego from resurfacing. Upon returning to civilization to meet up with his true love (Tyler), the brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination, a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction.

The second in the tie is “The Happening”, starring Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel (Bridge to Terabithia), and John Leguizamo, directed by M. Night Shyamalan (Lady in the Water). Genre: science fiction thriller / drama, not yet rated. The plot: a science teacher/wannabe musician, Elliot (Wahlberg), and his wife Alma (Deschanel) are having marital problems and are on the verge of separation, when they find that people start mysteriously killing themselves. At first it is reported that it is some sort of terrorist attack, but to their dismay, the couple learns that this is going on in every city around the world. Elliot is determined to figure out what is happening to everyone, but for now, Elliot and Alma must run from populated areas in hopes of finding a place where the large-scale threat to humanity is not present. As they travel, the carnage is everywhere.

For the weekend of June 20, it is “Get Smart”, starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Doom), Terence Stamp (Smallville), Masi Oka (Heroes), Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris), Alan Arkin, James Caan, and Bill Murray, directed by Peter Segal (The Longest Yard). Genre: action / adventure comedy, rated PG-13. The plot: Maxwell Smart (Carell). The headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked by the evil crime syndicate KAOS, and the identities of its agents are compromised. Control Chief (Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart (Carell), who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Johnson). Instead, Smart is partnered with the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Hathaway). Given little field experience and even less time, Smart is armed with nothing but some spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm, and must thwart the latest plot for world domination and the doomsday plans by the head of KAOS (Stamp).

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Kit Kittredge: An American Girl and The Love Guru.

For the weekend of June 27, and the Scottsdale Airpark Movie of the Month, it is “Wall-E”, starring the voices of Sigourney Weaver, John Ratzenberger (Ratatouille), Kathy Najimy (Numb3rs), Fred Willard (Back to You), and Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm), directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo). Genre: animated family comedy / science fiction adventure, not yet rated. The plot: sometime in the future, Earth becomes completely covered in garbage, making it virtually uninhabitable for humans. A solution is devised which will place all of humanity on luxurious space cruises for five years, in which time millions of WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) robots will clean up the planet. Unfortunately, all the robots malfunction except for one, and 400 years later, humanity remains in space while the lone surviving robot attempts to finish cleaning up the entire Earth by itself. Eventually, WALL-E becomes extremely curious about the planet he is cleaning and begins examining the refuse of the world that once was. After hundreds of years of cleaning and collecting, WALL-E develops a personality and feelings. Then a new scout ship is sent from the space cruisers to check on the progress of the cleanup and things change in a big way.

The other movie opening this weekend is Wanted.
