(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in May should they be?

For the weekend of May 7, it is “Iron Man 2”, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johannson, and Samuel L. Jackson, directed by Jon Favreau. Genre: Action / Adventure, rated PG-13. Plot: On one side is Justin Hammer (Rockwell), a fast-talking weapons manufacturer who fancies himself the next Tony Stark; on the other is Vanko (Rourke), who, while incarcerated in a Russian prison, creates his own battle-suit, which shoots devastating whip-like beams. Hammer and Whiplash join forces to take Stark down. Adding more flesh and blood is Stark's mysterious new assistant, Natasha (Johansson), who has an alter ego of her own, Black Widow. That introduction inevitably sparks romantic tension between Stark and former assistant Pepper Potts (Paltrow), who's been promoted to CEO of Stark Industries. Also showing in IMAX.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Babies, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, and Mother and Child.

For the weekend of May 14, it is “Robin Hood”, starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Matthew Macfadyen, Danny Huston, and Max von Sydow, directed by Shawn Levy. Genre: Drama, Action / Adventure, rated PG-13. Plot: The expert archer Robin Hood (Crowe) leads a band of marauders to confront corruption headed by the despotic sheriff (Macfadyen) and lead an uprising against the English crown near the end of the 12th Century. In an effort to save the village of Nottingham and win the hand of the spirited widow Lady Marion (Blanchett), the hero rises from humble beginnings to become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Just Wright and Letters to Juliet.

For the weekend of May 21, it is “Shrek Forever After”, starring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews and Jane Lynch, directed by Mike Mitchell. Genre: Animated Comedy, Family Adventure / Fantasy, rated PG. Plot: In this fourth instsallment, Shrek (Myers) is feeling over-domesticated. He has lost his roar. He used to send villagers running away in terror. Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches. To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a pact with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin. The pact goes awry and Shrek is sent to a different world version where he must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away as though he had barely existed. That translates into Fiona (Diaz) not knowing him, Donkey (Murphy) being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots (Bandares) trading his sword for a pink bow, and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom. Also showing in IMAX 3D.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Holy Rollers and MacGruber.

For the weekend of May 28, it is “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina, and Ben Kingsley, directed by Mike Newell . Genre: Fantasy, Action / Adventure, rated PG-13. Plot: Based on Ubisoft's popular video game, a young rogue prince (Gyllenhaal) in sixth century Persia must join forces with a feisty rival and exotic princess (Arterton), to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time dagger. This gift from the gods can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Micmacs, Sex and the City 2, and Survival of the Dead.

Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
