April 2009
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in April should they be?

For the weekend of April 3, it is “Adventureland”, starring Jesse Eisenberg (The Hunting Party), Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe), Kristen Stewart (Twilight), directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad). Genre: comedy, rated R. The plot: set in the summer of 1987 and centered around a recent college grad (Eisenberg) who takes a nowhere job at his local amusement park, he finds it to be the perfect gig to get him prepared for the real world.

The other four movies opening this weekend are: Fast & Furious, Gigantic, Paris 36, and Sugar.

For the weekend of April 10, it is “Observe and Report”, starring Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express), Anna Faris (The House Bunny), Ray Liotta (Wild Hogs), Michael Pena (Shooter), Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights), directed by Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way). Genre: comedy, rated R. The plot: at a shopping mall, head of security Ronnie (Rogen) patrols with an iron fist, combating skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun. His delusions of grandeur are put to the test when the mall is struck by a flasher. Ronnie seizes the opportunity to showcase his under appreciated law enforcement talents, hoping his solution to this crime will earn a coveted spot at the police academy and the heart of his elusive dream girl (Faris). But his single-minded pursuit of glory launches a turf war with an equally competitive police detective (Liotta), driving Ronnie to catch the flasher before the real cops do.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Case 39, Dragonball: Evolution, and Hannah Montana: The Movie.

For the weekend of April 17, and the Scottsdale Airpark Movie of the Month, “State of Play”, starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams (Red Eye), Robin Wright Penn (What Just Happened), Jason Bateman (Hancock), Jeff Daniels (Traitor), Helen Mirren (Inkheart), directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland). Genre: crime drama / suspense thriller, rated PG-13. The plot: based on the BBC mini-series of the same title, the mistress of a congressman (Affleck) is killed, and a team of investigative reporters secretly work with a police detective to solve the murder. A reporter (Crowe) who was once close to the congressman, now heads an investigation that leads to the highest levels of government and industry.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: 17 Again, Crank: High Voltage, and Every Little Step.

For the weekend of April 24, it is “The Soloist”, starring Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener (Hamlet 2), Tom Hollander (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Lisa Gay Hamilton (Deception), directed by Joe Wright (Atonement). Genre: drama, rated PG-13. The plot: a Julliard trained musician (Foxx), now schizophrenic and homeless, dreams of playing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He crosses paths with a Los Angeles journalist (Downey) looking for a new article for his paper who befriends him and tries to help him get “back on his feet” and make his dreams come true.

The other five movies opening this weekend are: Earth, Fighting, Mutant Chronicles, Obsessed, and Tyson.

These are expected to play at the multiplexes in the Scottsdale, AZ - Airpark area including:

  •  Harkins Scottsdale 101 at 7000 E. Mayo Blvd. 480-538-1707
