March 2010
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in March should they be?

For the weekend of March 5, it is “Alice in Wonderland”, starring Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman, directed by Tim Burton. Genre: Family Fantasy, Action / Adventure, rated PG. Plot: A magical and imaginative twist on one of the most beloved stories of all time. The 19-year-old Alice (Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter (Depp). Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the reign of terror caused by the Red Queen (Carter). Showing in 3D & even better viewed in IMAX 3D.

The other movie opening this weekend is: Brooklyn’s Finest.

For the weekend of March 12, it is “Green Zone”, starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Jason Isaacs, Amy Ryan, and Brendan Gleeson, directed by Paul Greengrass. Genre: Iraq War Action / Thriller, rated R. Plot: A U.S. Army officer (Damon) goes on the hunt for certain Weapons of Mass Destruction in a dangerous region when he discovers faulty intelligence, and a foreign correspondent follows the mission. Inspired by Imperial Life in the Emerald City.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Our Family Wedding, Remember Me, and She’s Out of My League.

For the weekend of March 19, it is “Repo Men”, starring Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Liev Schreiber, directed by Miguel Sapochnik. Genre: Action / Adventure Suspense / Thriller, rated R. Plot: In the near future, humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called The Union. The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don't pay your medical bill, The Union sends its highly skilled repo men (Law & Whitaker) to take back its property... with no concern for your comfort or survival.

The other six movies opening this weekend are: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, IMAX: Hubble 3D, Season of the Witch, The Bounty Hunter, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Runaways.

For the weekend of March 26, it is “How to Train Your Dragon”, starring Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, directed by Dean DeBlois & Chris Sanders. Genre: animated Action / Adventure / Kids / Family Fantasy, not yet rated. Plot: The son (Baruchel) of a Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely owner of a young dragon himself. In realizing his initial inclination may have been wrong, he then trains his scrawny, toothless dragon to be a brave hero. Based on Cressida Cowell's children's book, "How to Train Your Dragon." Showing in 3D & even better viewed in IMAX 3D.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Greenberg, Hot Tub Time Machine and I Love You Phillip Morris.

Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
