March 2008
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often five or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in March should they be?

For the weekend of March 7, it is “10,000 B.C.”, starring Steven Strait (The Covenant), Camilla Belle (the Quiet), Cliff Curtis (Live Free or Die Hard), and Omar Sharif, directed by Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow). Genre: action adventure / fantasy, rated PG-13. The plot: a sweeping odyssey into a mythical age of prophesies and gods, when spirits rule the land and mighty mammoths shake the earth. In a remote mountain tribe, the young hunter D'Leh (Strait), has found his heart's passion - the beautiful Evolet (Belle). But when a band of mysterious warlords raid his village and kidnap Evolet, D'Leh is forced to lead a small group of hunters to pursue the warlords to the end of the world to save her. Driven by destiny, the unlikely band of warriors must battle against immense odds, including an array of prehistoric predators. Their ultimate fate lies in an empire beyond imagination, where great pyramids reach into the skies. Here they will take their stand against a powerful god who has brutally enslaved their people.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: College Road Trip, Snow Angels, and The Bank Job.

FoFor the weekend of March 14, it is “Horton Hears a Who!”, starring the voices of Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Carol Burnett, Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), Dane Cook (Good Luck Chuck), and Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl), directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino (Robots). Genre: animated family adventure / fantasy, not yet rated. The plot: An adaptation of Dr. Seuss's 1954 children's book, "Horton Hears a Who" is about an imaginative elephant (Carrey) who hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite a surrounding community that thinks he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help. The mayor (Carell) of Who-ville, a distinguished figure of a very small size, is too small to be seen by the elephant's eyes.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Doomsday, Funny Games U.S., and Sleepwalking.

For the weekend of March 21, it is “Drillbit Taylor”, starring, Owen Wilson, Josh Peck (Drake & Josh), Alex Frost (The Standard), and Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), directed by Steven Brill (Without a Paddle). Genre: comedy, rated PG-13. The plot: After being harassed in their first days of high school by a bully, two teenagers (Peck & Frost) hire a person claiming to be a former soldier of fortune (Wilson) as a bodyguard, only to find out that he has his own agenda.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Meet the Browns, and Under the Same Moon (La misma luna).

For the weekend of March 28, and the Scottsdale Airpark News Movie of the Month, it is “21”, starring Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess (Across the Univewrse), Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), Masi Oka (Heroes), Liza Lapira (Law & Order SVU), Josh Gad (Back to You), and Laurence Fishburne, directed by Robert Luketic (Monster-in-Law). Genre: drama, rated PG-13. The plot: the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting by their less than ethical MIT professor (Spacey), and subsequently took a small group of Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Run Fatboy Run, Stop Loss, and Superhero Movie.

These are expected to play at the multiplexes in the Scottsdale, AZ - Airpark area including:

  •  Harkins Scottsdale 101 at 7000 E. Mayo Blvd. 480-538-1707
  •  AMC Desert Ridge 18 at 21000 N. Tatum Blvd. 480-606-0806
  •  United Artists (Regal) Sonora Village 10 at 15512 N. Pima Rd. 480-998-1300
  •  Farrelli’s Cinema Supper Club at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. 480-905-7200

  • Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

    See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
