February 2007
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often five or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week plus an extra one for Valentine’s day, which five in February should they be?

For the weekend of February 2nd, it is “Because I Said So” starring Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham, Piper Perabo (The Prestige), Stephen Collins (7th Heaven), Gabriel Macht (The Good Shepard) and Tom Everett Scott (Saved). A romantic comedy / drama, rated PG-13.
The plot: An overbearing / meddling mother (Keaton) and her two oldest daughters (Graham and Perabo) try to set up the youngest of the family (Moore) with the right man.

There are five other new releases this weekend: An Unreasonable Man, Constellation, Factory Girl, Raising Flagg, and The Messengers.

For the weekend of February 9th, it is “Breaking and Entering” starring Jude Law, Robin Wright Penn, Juliette Binoche and Vera Farmiga (The Departed). A crime thriller / romantic drama, rated R.
The plot: After the office of a young distressed architect is burglarized, and a series of what seems like random events begin to correlate, he (Law) begins to re-evaluate the direction of his life.

There are three other new releases this weekend: Hannibal Rising, Norbit, and The Lives of Others.

One extra this month for Valentine’s day February 14th, it is “Music and Lyrics” starring Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston. A romantic comedy, rated PG-13.
The plot: Though he (Grant) has never written song lyrics in his life, a washed-up singer is given a few days to compose what should be a chart-topping hit for an admiring teen sensation, he subsequently finds chemistry with an offbeat younger woman (Barrymore) with a flair for writing words.

For the weekend of February 16th, it is “Ghost Rider” starring Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, and Sam Elliott. A fantasy / action thriller, rated PG-13.
The plot: Based on the Marvel comic book character, former stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze (Cage) makes a deal with the devil where his body becomes host to a vengeful spirit, one that literally turns him into Hell on wheels, all in order to fight a powerful villain and secure the safety of his true love (Mendes).

There are seven other new releases this weekend: Avenue Montaigne, Breach, Bridge to Terabithia, Close to Home, Daddy's Little Girls, Days of Glory, and The Last Sin Eater.

For the weekend of February 23rd, it is “The Number 23” starring Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen and Danny Huston (The Proposition). A mystery thriller, rated R.
The Plot: A man (Carrey) becomes obsessed with a book purchased from a store that appears to be based on events in his life, taking many twists but then concluding with a tragedy that has yet to happen in real life.

There are seven other new releases this weekend: Amazing Grace, Glastonbury, Gray Matters, Reno 911!: Miami, Starter for 10, The Abandoned, and The Astronaut Farmer.

And now a look back to January, a must see film before it leaves theaters: “Letters from Iwo Jima” starring Ken Wantanabe (Memoirs of a Geisha) and directed by Clint Eastwood. A historical war drama, rated R.
The Plot: The story of the famous World War II battle of Iwo Jima, between entrenched Imperial Japan and the invading United States as told from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers who fought in it.

If you miss any of these in the first few weeks of release at the big multiplexes in the Airpark area including Harkins, AMC or United Artists / Regal, you might catch some of them at Farrelli’s Cinema Supper Club where you can have a full dinner or drinks served from a bar with your big screen / sound movie. Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
