January 2009
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)
Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood
continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films
in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system?
Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing
sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure
-- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.
There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see,
given there are often four or more new movies released every week.
So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released
movie per week, which four in January should they be?

For
the weekend of January 9, it is “Bride Wars”,
starring Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, Candice Bergen, and
Kristen Johnston (Music and Lyrics), directed by Gary Winick
(Charlotte’s Web). Genre: romantic comedy, not yet
rated. The plot: two best friends (Hathaway and Hudson)
become pitted against each other when their wedding dates
and locations clash due to a clerical error. They compete
for venues, services and guests, once it's clear that neither
will yield to the other.
The other three movies opening this weekend are: Not
Easily Broken, Possession, and
The Unborn. |

For
the weekend of January 23, it is “Inkheart”,

Iain Softley (The Skeleton Key). Genre: fantasy action /
adventure, rated PG. The plot: a young girl (Bennett) discovers
her father (Fraser) has the power to bring characters from
books to life just by reading them aloud. When a villainous
ruler (Serkis) and his band of rogues from a children's
fable kidnap the man, his daughter and her friends, both
real and imaginary, must rescue him. Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire
authored the big screen adaptation of German author Cornelia
Funke's fantasy novel, the first of a trilogy. "Inkspell"
was published last fall, and "Inkdawn" will be
out next year.
