January 2009
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in January should they be?

For the weekend of January 9, it is “Bride Wars”, starring Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, Candice Bergen, and Kristen Johnston (Music and Lyrics), directed by Gary Winick (Charlotte’s Web). Genre: romantic comedy, not yet rated. The plot: two best friends (Hathaway and Hudson) become pitted against each other when their wedding dates and locations clash due to a clerical error. They compete for venues, services and guests, once it's clear that neither will yield to the other.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Not Easily Broken, Possession, and The Unborn.

For the weekend of January 16, and the Scottsdale Airpark Movie of the Month, it is “Defiance”, starring Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), Liev Schreiber (Love in the Time of Cholera), and Jamie Bell (Jumper), directed by Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond). Genre: WWII drama, rated R. The plot: three Jewish brothers (Craig, Schreiber, Bell) in Poland during WWII escape from Nazi-occupied territory to the Belarussian forest and join forces with soldiers from the Russian Resistance.

The other four movies opening this weekend are: Hotel for Dogs, My Bloody Valentine 3-D, Notorious, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

For the weekend of January 23, it is “Inkheart”, starring Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany (The Secret Life of Bees), Jim Broadbent (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Andy Serkis (The Cottage), Eliza Bennett (Perfect Life) and Helen Mirren (The Queen), directed by Iain Softley (The Skeleton Key). Genre: fantasy action / adventure, rated PG. The plot: a young girl (Bennett) discovers her father (Fraser) has the power to bring characters from books to life just by reading them aloud. When a villainous ruler (Serkis) and his band of rogues from a children's fable kidnap the man, his daughter and her friends, both real and imaginary, must rescue him. Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire authored the big screen adaptation of German author Cornelia Funke's fantasy novel, the first of a trilogy. "Inkspell" was published last fall, and "Inkdawn" will be out next year.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: Killshot and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

For the weekend of January 30, it is “Taken”, starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace (The Jane Austen Book Club), and Famke Janssen (The Wackness), directed by Pierre Morel (Banlieue 13). Genre: crime thriller, action / adventure, rated PG-13. The plot: a former spy (Neeson) must use his old skills to rescue his estranged daughter (Grace), who is kidnapped while on vacation in Paris and forced into the slave trade.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: New In Town, The Class, and The Uninvited.

These are expected to play at the multiplexes in the Scottsdale, AZ - Airpark area including:

  •  Harkins Scottsdale 101 at 7000 E. Mayo Blvd. 480-538-1707

  • Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

    See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
