January 2008
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often five or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which four in January should they be?

For the weekend of January 4, and the Feature of the Month, it is “There Will Be Blood”, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine), directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (Punch Drunk Love). Genre: drama, rated R.
The plot: a story of greed, corruption and exploitation during the Texas oil boom of the early 20th century. An oil prospector (Day-Lewis) comes to a small run-down town, which has oil riches buried right below the surface. As he grows rich from the receipts, the town suffers and he becomes completely corrupted by the money, destroying his soul and the relationship with his son. A young preacher (Dano) who claims to be a prophet opposes the prospector, but also becomes corrupted by the power he yields over his flock. The story spans the lifetime of both and vividly describes their fall from grace.

The other movie opening this weekend is: One Missed Call.

For the weekend of January 11, it is “27 Dresses”, starring Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up), James Marsden (Hairspray) and Malin Akerman (The Heartbreak Kid), directed by Anne Fletcher (Step Up). Genre: romantic comedy, rated PG-13.
The plot: After serving as a bridesmaid 27 times, a young woman (Heigl) struggles with the idea of standing idle by her sister's side as her sibling (Akerman) marries the man (Marsden) she's secretly in love with.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: First Sunday, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, and The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie.

For the weekend of January 18, it is “Mad Money”, starring Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, Katie Holmes, and Ted Danson, directed by Callie Khouri (Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood). Genre: suspense comedy, rated PG-13.
The plot: A crime caper where three working-class women conspire to rob their employer, the Federal Reserve, of money about to be destroyed. Based on a true story, narrated by one of the women.

The other four movies opening this weekend are: City of Men, Cloverfield, Taxi to the Dark Side, and Teeth.

For the weekend of January 25, it is “Rambo”, starring Sylvester Stallone and Julie Benz (Dexter), directed by Sylvester Stallone. Genre: action adventure / drama, rated R.
The plot: Vietnam vet Rambo (Stallone) has survived many ordeals in his lifetime and has since withdrawn into a simple and secluded existence in Bangkok. After much prodding, he reluctantly accepts the job of taking a group of missionaries partially into Burma. But when they finally arrive at their destination, they are ambushed by the sadistic Burmese army. A portion of them are tortured and viciously murdered, while the renegade army holds the remainder captive. News soon reaches Rambo to lead a rescue effort, and with five mercenaries in tow, Rambo travels back into Burma to liberate the survivors.

The other six movies opening this weekend are: 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Be Kind Rewind, How She Move, Meet the Spartans, The Air I Breathe, and Untraceable.

These are expected to play at the multiplexes in the Scottsdale, AZ - Airpark area including:

  •  Harkins Scottsdale 101 at 7000 E. Mayo Blvd. 480-538-1707
  •  AMC Desert Ridge 18 at 21000 N. Tatum Blvd. 480-606-0806

  •  Farrelli’s Cinema Supper Club at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. 480-905-7200

  • Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

    See you at the movies!
