October 2009
(as seen in the Scottsdale Airpark News)

Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system? Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure -- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.

There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see, given there are often four or more new movies released every week. So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released movie per week, which five in October should they be?

For the weekend of October 2, it is “The Invention of Lying”, starring Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor, Patrick Stewart, and Jason Bateman, directed by Ricky Gervais and Matt Robinson. Genre: comedy, rated PG-13. Plot: In a world where no one has ever lied, a writer (Gervais) decides to change all that by seizing the opportunity for personal gain.

The other six movies opening this weekend are: A Serious Man, Capitalism: A Love Story, More Than a Game, St. Trinian’s, Whip It, and Zombieland.

For the weekend of October 9, it is “Couples Retreat”, starring Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, Malin Akerman, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, and Jean Reno, directed by Peter Billingsley. Genre: romantic comedy, not yet rated. Plot: Four couples go to a tropical-island resort for a vacation. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the others fail to realize that participation in the resort's therapy sessions is not optional.

The other two movies opening this weekend are: An Education, and Good Hair.

For the weekend of October 16, it is “Law Abiding Citizen”, starring Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Michael Gambon, and Colm Meaney, directed by F. Gary Gray. Genre: crime drama / thriller, rated R. Plot: 10 years after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered, a man (Butler) returns to exact justice from the district attorney (Foxx) who prosecuted the case against their killers. His vengeance threatens not only the man who allowed mercy to supersede justice, but also the system and the city that made it so.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: New York, I Love You, The Stepfather, and Where the Wild Things Are.

For the weekend of October 23, it is a tie. The first is “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Asistant”, starring John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Jane Krakowski, Orlando Jones, Salma Hayek, and Willem Dafoe, directed by Paul Weitz. Genre: action / adventure, fantasy thriller, rated PG-13. Plot: A young boy meets a mysterious man at a freak show who turns out to be a Vampire. After a series of events, the boy must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque Du Freak and become a Vampire.

The second is “Amelia”, starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, and Virginia Madsen, directed by Mira Nair. Genre: biographical drama, rated PG. Plot: A look at the life of legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 in an attempt to make a flight around the world.

The other five movies opening this weekend are: Antichrist, Motherhood, Ong Bak 2, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Saw VI.

For the weekend of October 30, it is “Youth In Revolt”, starring Michael Cera, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, and Jean Smart, directed by Miguel Arteta. Genre: comedy, rated R. Plot: The wild adventures of a teenage boy (Cera) who meets the girl of his dreams while on a family vacation, and has to turn his life and the lives of all those around him upside down in order to be with her.

The other three movies opening this weekend are: Gentlemen Broncos, This Is It and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.

Furthermore, gong to the movies still gives you the most entertainment “bang for the buck” when compared to a similar two hour venture at any professional sporting event, play or music performance.

See you at the movies!

Note: While the release dates & ratings for these movies were correct at the time of printing, studios sometimes make last-minute changes. If this happens, we apologize for any inconvenience.
