Movies in theaters are alive and well as Hollywood
continues to release some very exciting films. Why see these films
in a theater instead of at home on your great home theater system?
Some movies are best experienced on a massive screen with amazing
sound, with audience interaction, or maybe that guilty pleasure
-- with hot liquid butter poured all over that big bag of popcorn.
There could be one annoyance though -- deciding just what to see,
given there are often five or more new movies released every week.
So with your busy life, if you could see just one newly released
movie per week, which four in October should they be?

For
the weekend of October 5th, and the Feature of the Month,
it is “The Heartbreak Kid”
starring Ben Stiller, Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible
III), and Malin Akerman (The Brothers Soloman), directed
by the Farrelly brothers (Stuck on You). A romantic comedy,
rated R.
The plot: Single and indecisive, Eddie (Stiller) feels lonely
after attending yet another one of his friend’s weddings.
Being teased by his friends and family about being the only
remaining bachelor, Eddie decides to take the plunge. In
only a week of dating, with significant pressure from his
father and best friend, Eddie proposes to Lila (Akerman),
fearing it may be his last chance for love and marriage.
After the hastily prepared Hawaiian themed wedding, the
newlyweds embark on a three week honeymoon to Cabo, Mexico.
It is then that Eddie realizes what a horrible mistake he
has made. Lila turns out not to be the girl of his dreams,
but a girl from his nightmares. As soon as the honeymoon
road trip starts, she begins to drive Eddie crazy with her
outlandish and sometimes outright abusive antics. Luckily
for him, on his honeymoon, he meets his true soul mate,
Miranda (Monaghan). Now he must keep his monster of a wife
at bay, while he courts his true love.

For the
weekend of October 12th, it is “We Own the Night”
starring Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Robert Duvall, and
Eva Mendes, directed by James Gray (The Yards). A crime drama,
rated R.
The plot: Set at the height of a bloody 1980s struggle between
cops and a Russian mob that targeted law officers and their
families. That led the NYPD to hang "We Own the Night"
banners in precinct houses and step up their efforts. Wahlberg
and Phoenix play siblings in a cop-dominated family, with
Phoenix the black sheep who ends up managing a Russian mob-controlled
nightclub.

For
the weekend of October 19th, it is “Rendition”
starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Sarsgaard,
Meryl Streep, and Alan Arkin, directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi).
A spy thriller, rated R.
The plot: A CIA analyst (Gyllenhaal) endures life-threatening
problems after witnessing Egyptian police violently interrogate
a witness who is a possible terrorist suspect, at a secret
detention facility outside the US.
There are five other new releases this weekend: 30
Days of Night, Reservation Road,
Gone Baby Gone, The Comebacks,
and Wristcutters: A Love Story. |

For the
weekend of October 26th, it is “Dan in Real
Life” starring Steve Carrell, Juliette Binoche,
Dane Cook and Dianne Wiest, directed by Peter Hedges (Pieces
of April). A romantic comedy / drama, rated PG-13.
The plot: Follows a widower (Carell) with three daughters
who writes a parenting column for his local newspaper. His
strict rules for behavior are tested when he meets and falls
for the girlfriend (Binoche) of his younger brother (Cook)
during a family reunion.
There are five other new releases this weekend: Saw
IV, Things We Lost in the Fire,
Funny Games, Rails & Ties,
and Run, Fat Boy, Run. |
