Title: Soul Calibur 2
Review rating: ***1/2
Platform/console: Playstation2, GameCube, Xbox
Release date: August 2003
Genre: Fighting
Players allowed: 1 to 2 players
ESRB rating: T (suggestive themes, violence)

A sword known as the Soul Edge provides the main motivation for most of the battle in this fighting title. The easy, normal and several hard levels which should leave your fingers pretty sore by the end of the day. The Weapon Master mode provides great new features with an in-depth storyline and map laid out into chapters as you battle for experience, gold and more weapons.

There also plenty of levels, weapons and strategies in the other modes that include time attack and practice (freestyle or against the CPU). The arcade mode stages let you acquire gold, open extra arcade modes and character profiles (mostly describing their motives) when you complete levels. You fight a destined battle against another character before battling Inferno at the end who changes weapons and styles twice during the match.

Controls work well, but more use of analog control sticks would save gamers from some serious button mashing. You can push buttons at character screen before fights to say words. The graphic are top notch complete with wind effects and rich texture. The female characters get more respect as well with improved fighting skills and appropriate attire. Recommended and full of surprise guests including Spawn (on the Xbox version) and Tekken characters.
