Title: Army Men Advance
Review rating: **
Platform/console: GameBoy Advance
Release date: June 2001
Genre: Action
Players allowed: 1
ESRB rating: E (mild violence)
Production company: 3DO

This update of the Army Men series has creatively mapped environments with cartoon like colors. You only get a choice of two characters in a medium challenge throughout 12 missions - ideal for younger players. The AI of your enemies is pretty average as their only real challenge is to attack you at angles instead of straight on. You can’t use the enemies as shields because they fire right through each other to you.

The controls have a strafe option, the R button, and you use the L button to switch from semi-automatic to auto (if you’ve acquired one). For continuous shooting, the semi-automatic weapon shoots 1, 2, 3 in between each shot and the automatic shoots six rounds between each pause. Not many objects to avoid except moving vehicles that can damage you easily if you get too close.

Amusing situations like a gunship in a bathtub and swarming attacks from all angles on the screen make this title likable, but replay is limiting especially since there’s bonus missions/maps or multiplayer option.
